Give-away Day: Hawthorne threads Gift Card/Books

Hi All! I love this day each year, the opportunity to give back to the community and say thank you. So thanks to my followers old and new.

For those that are new, you can also find me on Instagram (IG) – ml_wilkie. I have been quilting for 3 years and have loved that I can combine my STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) background and my arts side. I discovered through Quilt Design a Day,  modern quilt designing is definitely my favorite aspect of quilting. Many of my quilts are my own designs.

Onto the give away!!….I wanted to make sure that I give back to all those who supported me through the year. So, this giveaway combines two things that I love:

I’m so new to quilting that I almost don’t know what to ask about! I guess about the actual quilting process – it seems to complex like a shop has to do it for you, but I know that’s not true.

I just love making quilt tops ( I do the whole process)& trying to go modern….just unsure putting colors together. I procrastinate so much!

I would love to learn everything and anything about building a modern quilt. I have never tried one but would love to. Thank you for the give away. It will be a awesome win for someone.

I enjoy seeing the way you interpret architectural objects into a quilt design and when you show several iterations of the design it is very helpful. Thank you.

I would love to hear more about planning a quilt, with the final quilting in mind. I love playing with fabric, but its the quilting that lets me down. Thanks for the giveaway. Tarnia.hodges at gmail.com

I would really like to know more about changing the size of a quilt – I’m in the UK and I think our beds are smaller… but I’m never confident about changing the proportions on someone else’s design!

Your question is a tough one for me because I don’t particularly feel like I am a “modern” quilter. I don’t feel like I fit in with the very traditional ladies in traditional guilds- so I like the whole discussions about inclusiveness, defining what is modern, etc.

I love modern, but I suck at color choice, no matter how many classes I take I just can’t seem to get the right combination, cuss, cuss…..

I’d like tips on color selection and combining prints. I’m drawn to large scale prints but I’m stumped at figuring out complements. Thanks for the giveaway!

I’d love to figure out how to get my ideas “translated” into a quilt! I have the ideas, just don’t quite get the quilt out of them. Thanks for the chance to win!

I’d love to learn more about the design lines through a quilt. And of course how to improve colour/pattern matching.

I follow your blog, and can’t recommend just one other! I love looking at MQG on Instagram, follow several modern quilters’ blogs (Christa Quilts, Kathleenquilts, Molli Sparkles, and more!).

I’d love to find a quicker way of working out yardage needed for pattern purposes, I’ve just designed my first quilt and it was a lengthy process, it’s now in testing stage so fingers crossed my maths was right!

I find it difficult working out what size fabric I need to start off with for freestyle curves.I don’t think why I struggle to get my head around the seam allowances but I do!

I think a post about fixing any mistakes would be crucial! Sometimes things don’t work out as envisioned and I love the idea of embracing that and going with it or making a tweak to make it work. Not necessarily fudging – I’m talking about making something to be proud of despite a bump in the road.

The main tip I need is how to balance all the things in life so I can actually finish all the quilts I have started over the past couple of years.
