Marmite a piece of Kiwiana + Meal Plan {05.05.2013}

I am well and truly a New Zealand marmite kid 😉 and so now is my son. Marmite is a piece of Kiwiana, and I believe you really do have to grow up on it to appreciate it. It has been very difficult the last 12-18 months without marmite….it definitely was “Marmageddon“. Imagine, that you can no longer buy chocolate or coffee, it just disappeared from the shop and there is no replacement, what would you do??? Now you might understand 🙂

The shortage of marmite, was due to the series of earthquakes that struck Christchurch New Zealand in February 2011, that caused the factory to temporarily close due to damage. It was the only production factory of marmite.

Anyway, this week my Mum sent over our Marmite. We went straight out, bought fresh white bread from our local french bakery, added butter and marmite. It was delicious, scrumptious, wonderful…that salty taste – there is nothing else in the world like it 🙂

    You’re not kidding about the acquired taste!! I received a local gift box from a kiwi a few years ago and he included marmite. I tried to be open minded and followed the toasting and buttering instructions… Made it through one bite and ran away screaming! So glad you have some now, nothing like hitting one of those cravings. 🙂

    Ha, I agree it is an acquired taste, I love marmite and also miss it but I had stocked up so actually had more marmite than my NZ friends because of the shortage. My folks arrive from NZ on Saturday and I hope they bring the requested marmite and pineapple lumps!! Enjoy your marmite 🙂

      oooh pineapple lumps :-). Now for sweets I have a list. Snifters, Licorice allsorts, MacIntoshes, Minties, chocolate fish and for cookies/buscuits…Ginger nuts, Macroons, Toffee pops are my fav’s. I can find the NZ Licorice all sorts in the US but that is about it.

        yummy, now I wish I had requested more 🙂 I am fortunate that there is a sweet shop about 6 miles away that does have a few NZ sweets but not my favourite pineapple lumps!! MacIntoshes always remind me of lollie scrambles! 🙂
