Give-away Day: Hawthorne threads Gift Card/Books

Hi All! I love this day each year, the opportunity to give back to the community and say thank you. So thanks to my followers old and new.

For those that are new, you can also find me on Instagram (IG) – ml_wilkie. I have been quilting for 3 years and have loved that I can combine my STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) background and my arts side. I discovered through Quilt Design a Day,  modern quilt designing is definitely my favorite aspect of quilting. Many of my quilts are my own designs.

I guess I need to work on my quilt math- I’m not very good at designing my own quilts but I’m working on my first one!

I always appreciate tips on quilting with my sewing machine since I don’t have a long-arm. Thanks for the giveaway.

The biggest thing I still have issues with is free motion quilting. And I’m always up for learning different ways to bind!

Tips on designing a modern quilt – guess I’d want more information on how to use concepts of design for a successful quilt.

Wow. Tough question. I haven’t done a lot with modern design. For me, it is tricky to be minimalist without being predictable, if that makes sense.

I really need help with putting the finishing touches on my quilts! The tops always turn out so beautiful but finishing them makes me nervous! I have so many unfinished quilt tops!

I’d love to know how inspiration comes about for a modern quilt. I am a new quilter, and often see elements in more traditional quilts that I’d be interested in seeing extracted into a modern framework.

I’m a fairly confident quilter and am at a place where trying to be modern isn’t for me. So I guess just the process of creating your own design because it is always interesting to see how others do it!

I’m a new quilter and just want to try everything–I like to work on narrowing down the types of quilts I work on so I can hone my techniques.

I’ve made several quilts this year incorporating ideas from more than one design…just kind of “winging it,” but happy with the results so far! I love learning from other quilters.

I have been wondering (because I’m new to quilting and I really don’t know the answer to this question) -if you don’t have a pattern, is your quilt attempt going to fail? Like, If I just start cutting and sewing based on a thought in my head without making a pattern for it, will it be all wonky in the end? Because me and math, we don’t get along, and I really don’t feel like figuring that all out…

Designing my own quilts! Yup, I’ve not ever followed a pattern. The hardest part for me is piecing the negative space around my design…trying to decide when to use a whole piece or when to use multiple pieces that COULD be one piece…sometimes, two or more is just easier…aside from that, I’m really a failure at color theory, mostly because I like what I like and it doesn’t necessarily match the color theory and rule of thirds that seem to be so important to others. I’m excited about the opportunity for the books!

How to wrangle a bigger quilt on a small machine – I dread getting to the middle of my quilts because of all the rolling & shoving involved!

I don’t even know what it is I need to know! Lol. I’m not sure I’m ready to start designing my own quilts yet, but a peek into how others do it is always interesting. Part of my mind hears ‘quilt design’ and thinks ‘that sounds like math…back away slowly…’
    Great giveaway…love Hawthorne Threads!

Color choice is always a topic I love to read about. Sometimes I feel like I have a great design idea but a wrong color choice can ruin the whole feel of a quilt. It’s something I struggle with and would like to learn more about.

I would love to know more about picking color for a modern quilt – always seems like the hardest part for me so I just buy bundles and go the “un-modern” route!
