Hi All! I love this day each year, the opportunity to give back to the community and say thank you. So thanks to my followers old and new.
For those that are new, you can also find me on Instagram (IG) – ml_wilkie. I have been quilting for 3 years and have loved that I can combine my STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) background and my arts side. I discovered through Quilt Design a Day, modern quilt designing is definitely my favorite aspect of quilting. Many of my quilts are my own designs.

This has been such an amazing year from finishes and success. I hope you take some time to look around. The mosaic above shows my finished projects for 2015 – they can be found in the menu above.
Onto the give away!!….I wanted to make sure that I give back to all those who supported me through the year. So, this giveaway combines two things that I love:
- Fabric – $50 gift card to Hawthorne threads

- 3 books I have enjoyed lately (sent via amazon)

Thanks to all who left a comment. Fantastic suggestions and I had fun reading all the comments. Drum roll….the WINNER is:
Erica – Erica I will send you an email shortly to get all your details for posting the books.

I guess I need to work on my quilt math- I’m not very good at designing my own quilts but I’m working on my first one!

Tips on color selections. Thanks
I always find the process of choosing a quilting design a bit daunting.
I always need help with selecting colors! thanks!

I always appreciate tips on quilting with my sewing machine since I don’t have a long-arm. Thanks for the giveaway.
I follow by email.
I need help with blending fabrics of different scale.
The biggest thing I still have issues with is free motion quilting. And I’m always up for learning different ways to bind!

Tips on designing a modern quilt – guess I’d want more information on how to use concepts of design for a successful quilt.
I would love to learn more about “maximalism” and how that might be interpreted according the MQG.
I follow on IG. My friend Neva @somelikeitquilted is an amazing modern quilter!
Wow. Tough question. I haven’t done a lot with modern design. For me, it is tricky to be minimalist without being predictable, if that makes sense.
I really need help with putting the finishing touches on my quilts! The tops always turn out so beautiful but finishing them makes me nervous! I have so many unfinished quilt tops!
I am also an IG follower! & it may be very popular but i LOVE missouriquiltco
I’m a follower – love your store!
I love to learn everything I can – thanks.
I’d love to know how inspiration comes about for a modern quilt. I am a new quilter, and often see elements in more traditional quilts that I’d be interested in seeing extracted into a modern framework.
I’m a fairly confident quilter and am at a place where trying to be modern isn’t for me. So I guess just the process of creating your own design because it is always interesting to see how others do it!
I have really been into follow outdoor accounts on IG lately, man they make me want to travel the US more! @usinterior @mypubliclands
I’d love to learn more about the entire process of design…from vision to a finished pattern. Thanks for the giveaway.
I’d love to learn more about fabric selection (kat-gray@hotmail.com)
I follow via instagram and also enjoy following the quiltsofinstagram (kat-gray@hotmail.com)
I’m a new quilter and just want to try everything–I like to work on narrowing down the types of quilts I work on so I can hone my techniques.
I usually always design my own quilts but have trouble matching fabrics. So usually stick with collections.
I’ve made several quilts this year incorporating ideas from more than one design…just kind of “winging it,” but happy with the results so far! I love learning from other quilters.
I have been wondering (because I’m new to quilting and I really don’t know the answer to this question) -if you don’t have a pattern, is your quilt attempt going to fail? Like, If I just start cutting and sewing based on a thought in my head without making a pattern for it, will it be all wonky in the end? Because me and math, we don’t get along, and I really don’t feel like figuring that all out…
Designing my own quilts! Yup, I’ve not ever followed a pattern. The hardest part for me is piecing the negative space around my design…trying to decide when to use a whole piece or when to use multiple pieces that COULD be one piece…sometimes, two or more is just easier…aside from that, I’m really a failure at color theory, mostly because I like what I like and it doesn’t necessarily match the color theory and rule of thirds that seem to be so important to others. I’m excited about the opportunity for the books!
I would love to learn how to quilt as I go 🙂
How to wrangle a bigger quilt on a small machine – I dread getting to the middle of my quilts because of all the rolling & shoving involved!
Mixing patterns! I have no courage!
Following you on IG. Thanks for the giveaway!
I’d love to learn more about free motion quilting on a home machine!
I know little about designing my own quilts though I did design and make one. I really just winged it.
I don’t even know what it is I need to know! Lol. I’m not sure I’m ready to start designing my own quilts yet, but a peek into how others do it is always interesting. Part of my mind hears ‘quilt design’ and thinks ‘that sounds like math…back away slowly…’
Great giveaway…love Hawthorne Threads!
Id love to learn FMQ! Only so many straight lines you can sew!

Color choice is always a topic I love to read about. Sometimes I feel like I have a great design idea but a wrong color choice can ruin the whole feel of a quilt. It’s something I struggle with and would like to learn more about.
I’m looking to learn more about color/fabric choices. My favorite part is the FMQing, I’m a beginner but eager to learn more. Thanks for the chance.
I’m already a follower. Almost every day I take a peek at http://highroadquilter.blogspot.com/ and http://culturalfusionquilts.blogspot.com/ : )
I would love to know more about picking color for a modern quilt – always seems like the hardest part for me so I just buy bundles and go the “un-modern” route!
I would really like to learn how to mark quilts for longarm quilting.
Definitely need to learn about color selection!
