Denim Blues {a finish}

Last night, I whipped up a quick birthday present for a close friend. She had sent me a photo earlier of her new color palette of her living room. I have loved the mix of denim, a white solid and liberty lawn for a while now. I decided that combination would be perfect for a pillow in that room.

I used Art Gallery Fabric, Denim as I had some left over and its so soft, perfect for a pillow. The flying geese are 2 x 4″ finished, and a white solid with a splash of a Liberty Lawn print.

I decided to keep the sleek, more modern look with 1″ straight line quilting on the denim. The flying geese are quilted around the edges.

I love this backing fabric from Amy Sinibaldi, Manuscript in Navy, Paperie for Art Gallery Fabrics. It was the perfect complement to the front. I used an envelope finish instead of a zipper.

It was a great quick project. I really enjoyed playing with these fabrics.

In the Works

It has been a while since I have documented, on my blog, my WiPs. I have been using Instagram mostly to document the my additions to various projects. However,  I am feeling the need to finish some  of these projects, which lets to active planning and accountability.

So here goes….what am I working on that needs to be completed for September/October/November time frame?

September Projects – Quilts

Sunday Best: Goal is to finish this quilt in September. The top and the back are all ready for basting/quilting.

Orange Creamsicle: An Improv hand-stitching project which I would like the top and back to be finished in September. I am still deciding how large it will be…maybe 36″ x 48″ or I might do 48″ x 48″??

Ode to Clothes: Part of a study that I started out of the blue last night, inspired by Lance Letscher’s paper/paint work and #makedoquilt. Made from clothes – T-Shirts with Cord and Wool Trousers. I would like the top for this one complete. It will likely be a mini quilt – currently a ~24″ square. I thinking of adding more negative space. More to come on this project.

Quilt Journaling

I have always jotted down ideas, kept inspirational images around, stored great color palettes but everything is usually all over the place. After Melissa @meliherboth presented her quilt journal, I was determined to consolidate and keep a better record for myself.

I suppose I kind of already do that here on this blog, but the journal offers me a tactile option, something physical. That truly appealed to me.

Sketchbook

I use these sketchbooks, which have these great covers are designed by Sarah Watts. I love the blank pages and the thickness of the pages are perfect when adding the glue. Oh, yes I get to glue, play with layout and some drawing.

Journal_SundayBest

What do I put on the pages as a keepsake, you might ask? It really depends on what that particular quilt inspires me to include. I so like looking at the variation between quilts.
Journal_OrangeCreamsicle1

Some basic information I always include though:

  • Name of quilt
  • Finished Size of quilt
  • Quilting description or if I send it off for quilting and by who
  • Date it was finished (a complete finish)
  • A collection of fabrics that went into the quilt
  • Inspiration / Spark for the quiltJournal_Fractions

Variable information:

  • If it is a block based quilt – I include measurements of the block so I can write it up or remake in future.
  • Block layout or color layout options or various sizes.
  • If it is improv. – what limits am I using, any key designs I have used and the inspiration for those designs.
    Journal_SundayBest2
  • If new techniques – I add notes on what I have learned along the way (hand-stitching notes)
    Journal_OrangeCreamsicle2
  • Quilting design ideas
  • Design changes along the way

Once the project is finished, I take Polaroids of quilt (using a Fujifilm Instax Camera). These I place in an envelope which is glued to the page…a finishing touch for the quilts.

I must say, I love the creative side of making the journal. A little like project work back in school.

How do you all keep track of your quilts? Do you journal? What do you add to the pages?
