Christmas blocks – Place mats or table runner

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Needing a break from making the coffee cup sleeves, I decided to break out the Dear Mr. Claus jelly roll I had purchased.

For my current work in progress, I am thinking of making place mats or a table runner with them. I started making a rectangle block based on the “Sunspot” Design from book “The Practical Guide to Patchwork”, by Elizabeth Hartman. This is how it looks so far:

Now the decision is just how to use the blocks, if I use them for the place mats I will cut them in 1/2, the table runner I will use the block as is. Decisions, Decisions.

The craft fair stock is also coming along. This is what it looks like so far (coffee sleeves and chair bags).

Reusable coffee cup sleeves – SOLD!!

It’s so nice to take a 5 minute break, so I can do some blogging instead of sewing :-).

As I mentioned last week, I signed up to my company’s Christmas craft fair (December 5th); but I was realizing the work I would need to do, to get stock to sell in the craft fair.

Things are coming along with the reusable coffee cup sleeves, and they are looking good. I have put in a significant amount of work into design, patch working and the quilting of these, but the most important thing…I am having a lot of fun doing it. You won’t believe this but I am having trouble keeping the sleeves for the fair – I have already sold 6 of them!!!

Here are some of the finished ones which I am keeping for the fair.

1. Coffee themed sleeve and coaster (coffee bean fabric from Spoonflower, designer: glimmericks)

2. Earth-toned sleeve  (coffee cup featured material from Spoonflower, designer: heidikenney)

3. Blue, green and grey block sleeve

4. Red and Black Sleeves – SOLD!!

Here are some that are still a work in progress (take a look at last week’s blog for additional design’s):

I plan on making 10 coffee cup sleeve + coaster sets, and 20 individual coffee cup sleeve….that is in addition to what I just sold.  All of them are either cut out or have the top at least sewn. This weekend, luckily with the long weekend, I should have them all done.

Craft storage board in the making

I decided that I need a craft storage board for my cottons, ribbons and scissors to get them off my sewing table.

Deciding that I can make it myself, I went off to Lowes Hardware and bought a pre-cut board. I really wanted a green chevron pattern for the base.

I painted the board with a premium white primer (3 coats) and once dried I went about laying the blue painters tape on the board to mark out my pattern. I used my 5 1/2 on square to get the perfect 2 inch alternating stripes. Below is board with all stripes laid down and the first coat of green wall paint.

After 4 coats of green paint (making sure it was dry before each application) the green was done. Leaving it to become touch dry, I then removed the painters tape – this is how it turned out. I was very pleased.

Next steps, I need to add:

  • hooks on the bottom for scissors
  • dowel bits at an angle (2-3 rows) so I can put cotton
  • 1 row of dowel with two end pieces that will hold my ribbon

I will post photos once it is all finished.
