Kaleidoscope of Butterflies + Oopsy-daisy

Did you know that multiples of butterflies are called by numerous names? Some of those include swarm, rabble and my favorites a flight or a kaleidoscope of butterflies. So for my work in progress, the butterfly baby quilt, the name has been decided… “Kaleidoscope of Butterflies”.

I have definitely made progress this week on the butterflies and almost have 3 finished. The large 10″ teal and pink butterfly, I am very happy with….even snuck in there some Botanics (a favorite line).

The 8″ Orange and Pink Butterfly is almost there and sneaking in some Safari Moon fabric (another favorite line).

Here is an overview of all three…….and I decided I am adding 1 more 5″ butterfly to balance the Orange and Pinks.

Don’t forget to check out last week’s post for the Juliet’s butterfly paper-piecing patterns.

Now, to my oopsy-daisy. Remember my sewing room additions for Ikea storage shelves, seen here:

Well, the other night I heard a huge crash…thinking it was the boys (the hubby and son) I rushed outside…but everything was fine. I was confused as I could not find the reason behind the crash. Well, later that night I found this and lots of broken glass:

That resulted in a complete reorganization of my space. This is how my room looked originally:

This is now my new space…the bookcase, project table (fabric storage) + sewing room:

….and the holes are temporarily fixed with a design wall:

Butterfly Baby Quilt

Something is in the water for sure. I have several friends at the moment that are pregnant. Congratulations to all of them!! The first one that is due, is my hairdresser, who is having a girl in late June.

I have always loved Juliet @ Tartankiwi’s butterfly paper piecing patterns. It did not take me long to make a decision to make my hairdresser a quilt using these patterns. I am thinking of using a 5″, 8″ and 10″ butterfly, moving up the quilt and the background will be all improv. low volume fabrics.

The first one, the 5″ Butterfly is complete. The main fabric used in this block will driving the color combinations of the bigger butterflies.  I am loving the color combinations.SmallButterfly_5

The 10″ butterfly is 1/2 way through. I am keeping with the teal and pink theme.

The last one, I am wanting to pull out that lime green that is scattered in the print, with orange and teal highlights.

If you are interested in Juliet’s patterns, they can be found in Craftsy:

I am hoping to have the quilt finished memorial day weekend…just in time for my last hair appointment before she leaves on maternity. Best news is…this is my May goal for ALYOF…and I have started!!

Week 1: FMQ practice + Winner

I started this week, with trying out FMQ on my new machine. My start was interesting – it took me almost an hour to work out how to change the foot and change the metal plate to the one I needed. I finally could start.

Bought to you from my INSTAGRAM FEEDS (ml_wilkie)….

I practiced some pebbling and some geometric squares. The pebbling did not go well, as I still had trouble knowing where to go. I did like the geometrics better.

To improve my pebbling, I spend a lot of the week practicing on paper….practice! practice! practice!

On Day 5, was much better but I still need to keep working on it.

More drawing on Day 6, this time playing with swirls and trying out a possible pattern for my stitch and flip quilt top.
