Something is in the water for sure. I have several friends at the moment that are pregnant. Congratulations to all of them!! The first one that is due, is my hairdresser, who is having a girl in late June.
I have always loved Juliet @ Tartankiwi’s butterfly paper piecing patterns. It did not take me long to make a decision to make my hairdresser a quilt using these patterns. I am thinking of using a 5″, 8″ and 10″ butterfly, moving up the quilt and the background will be all improv. low volume fabrics.
The first one, the 5″ Butterfly is complete. The main fabric used in this block will driving the color combinations of the bigger butterflies. I am loving the color combinations.
The 10″ butterfly is 1/2 way through. I am keeping with the teal and pink theme.
The last one, I am wanting to pull out that lime green that is scattered in the print, with orange and teal highlights.
If you are interested in Juliet’s patterns, they can be found in Craftsy:
I know this sounds terrible but I am struggling this month on what I should choose as my “A lovely year of finishes”.
This is what should have happened in April, which is not too bad:

I did add additional projects too, unfortunately that has meant more UFO’s. You can see my original goals for May here. This month, my projects are varied and I would like to make progress on all of it.

However, the one project I select for this month, is a project that is brand new and not a any list previously. It is a baby quilt made with Juliet @ Tartankiwi’s butterfly paper piecing block. I have a color scheme in mind and a design, so stay tuned.!! This is what I a linking up.
Linking up with “A lovely year of finishes” (see button on the right).
This weekend was very productive. I managed to get all three receiving blankets finished. They are gifts for my colleagues, each has a new baby boy. I love how they turned out, the colors are fantastic.
I have decided, I am not a huge fan of the minky dimple dot – lots of vacuuming needs to be done to remove all the fluff of my floor. Each of the quilts have minimal quilting, just some simple lines to hold everything in place. The final details for each quilt:
Left Quilt + Right Quilt Fabric: Kona Sunset Charm Pack,
Sashing: Kona White Jelly Roll
Backing: Minky Dimple Dot
Size: 23″ x 27″
and of course the photo’s. As its my first big finish, I made sure I captured it I hope you don’t mind me sharing :-).
The finished front and back of Simply Stars
The casual thrown on the chair look
In case, you need more close-ups of the binding and quilting
Lastly, the inaugural roll
I am linking up with Janice @ Better off Thread for Sew Cute Tuesday, which I am super excited about since it was her ultra wavy quilting design I tried and Linking up with Amanda Jean @ Crazy Mom Quilts for Finish it up Friday – even though its a few days away.
As this is the 1st of 2 quilts I put as my goals for July, I am checking in for mid-July with “A Lovely year of finishes”.
On Friday, I posted about finishing the front of my first baby quilt, Simply Stars. Well, I had a pretty productive weekend and made significant progress on that quilt. It is not finished but I thought I would share some sneak peeks of the progress I made.
This is the quilt back. I made a panel with 3 wonky stars but in the reverse of the front….the back pieces are white, while the stars are made of Simply Color and Simply Style Charm Packs. For the rest of the back, the green solid woven with yellow fabric used as a border for the star panel and the striped fabric, I had to go shopping at my LQS. What a shame !!!
Since I finished the back in record time, I started quilting on Sunday. I am using an ultra wavy line quilting, which Janice from Better of Thread featured here, and sewing in Grey Aurifil thread. I am about 1/2 way through so here is a sneak peek of the front.
A couple of close-up photos of the quilting through the stars. The only other quilting I have done has been on a smaller scale, like in pillows (and here) and the Madrona Road mini quilt….so I am super happy how this is turning out. It is not perfect, it is so much harder sewing a much bigger object. I am loving the grey thread. The main thing is I am having fun, and I am sure the imperfections will just add character :-).
I am hoping to show it off on Friday – which will depend on how my work week goes.
First off, it’s my sister’s birthday today. Happy Birthday Sis.
The other big news today is that I finished my first baby quilt top (that now makes 1 x mini quilt, and 1 x twin quilt top)…yippee !!!
Simply Stars I love V and Co. “Simply” charm packs. They are so bright and colorful. The designs are very geometric but still whimsical, perfect for a baby quilt. The other great thing about this quilt, is it came together really quickly. Each star block took me about 30 minutes, and each 9 block took about 15 minutes. I love that it was so quick and easy.
After much practice, I think I finally have the knack for matching square blocks. I am very proud how aligned everything is. I was able to take some quick photos this afternoon which is very lucky as we have had thunderstorms/rain every afternoon for the last two weeks. Today is perfect weather!!!
Anyway that’s it, here are some of the details
Name: Simply Stars
Design/Inspiration: No pattern the inspiration came from these two quilts that appeared on pinterest….Reverse Hopscotch @ V and Co. and Elephants on Parade @ Sew Crafty Jess.
Fabric: Simply Style and Simply Color from V & Co. for Moda + Kona White. Size: 54″ x 54″
I am traveling for work this week, in theory, as it has started out with a cancelled flight and rescheduling for tomorrow. I am still optimistic, I will make it one way or another. As I will be out on Wednesday I wanted to share the progress made on the baby quilt I posted last week.
I have now completed the first row!! I love how easy this quilt is with 5 inch squares – everything I have tried so far has been much smaller.
The second row has been put up on the design board to get a sense of look and feel. I can’t wait to have some more time to work on it. I think the combination with Simply Color and Simply Style Charm Packs look great together and I really like the single color blocks.
I am hoping to have this quilt top finished this weekend. In the meantime, I had 5 hours sitting in the airport today sewing hexagons and plan on more hexies over the week while out on the road (loving the hand piecing).
