QDAD: Quilt Design a Day (Week 7)

This week, saw the start of a “Challenge Week” for the Quilt Design of the Day group. A topic is posted at the start of the day, and then you choose to participate or not. It was a lot of fun.

31 July: Gridded

The rigging on the sail boats inspired this grid like pattern. I love the work from Yoshiko Jinzenji, and earlier this year tried out some applique, which I think I would use to add the grid lines to this piece.

However, the palette would not be a keeper for me. I would really like to do this one a dark crossweace fabric with black, cream or grey prints….I loved the pop of red in the single square. QDAD_Gridded_Grey31JULY2014

The palette had so many great colors today. I really wanted to play with the outer circle of a drunkard path block. This initial design I found to be just too big….

…so, I played some more. I am partial to the third one.QDAD_1AUG2014_v3    QDAD_1AUG2014_v2

2 August: Shelves

I was on facebook and a suggested post of a modern bookcase was on my page….that turned into this design. Cerise will be a new background color for sure 🙂

3 August: Challenge Day 1 “Triangles”

I used both color palettes this day to show the same design. This is my favorite of the week. I love both palettes with the linen background. Using the green’s + grey from the flamingo print:QDAD_FlyingGeeseGreenLinen_3August2014

And the browns, creams and grey from the feathers:QDAD_FlyingGeeseBrownLinen_3August2014

4 August: Challenge Day 2 “300”

Screen Shot 2014-08-09 at 10.25.36 AM

This was hard for me to come up with…in the end I chose a low-volume background with the Roman Numeric for 300 “CCC”.QDAD_300v2_4August2014

5 August: Challenge Day 3 ” Squares” – Diamonds are forever

Screen Shot 2014-08-09 at 10.26.15 AM

I loved the blue palette for this one and decided that a mix of prints and a little solid was great for this simple design.

6 August: Challenge Day 4 “Circles” – Through Shattered Rose Glasses

Screen Shot 2014-08-09 at 10.21.19 AM

This design is an older design that I refurbished for the pick palette. The original is based on Alice in Wonderland “Through the Shattered Looking Glass“. First of one using a cream background:

Or a darker background:

That’s it for this week, more on the challenges in next week’s post. I have created a summary page here, if you want to take a look at previous weeks.

UFO’s and the Neighbourhood Quilt

Ok, so where did July go???

I wanted to let you all know that I may be a little busy over the next few weeks. Great news, it is all to do with sewing/quilting. Over the weekend, after finishing another quilt top, I laid out all my UFO’s….quilt top finishes.

3 of the quilt tops were finished in the last 3 months, the other 3 in the last year. To add to the pile, I have at least 2-3 additional quilt tops in the works; one of which, is the Neighbourhood Quilt. I have started the 3rd row, and decided on all the Oakshott Cotton colors I will be using for the other blocks.

So, my priorities (well lets say its more a refocus exercise) over the next few weeks are:

  • Finish “Neighborhood” Quilt – top, baste, quilt and bind (this will be my main goal for August for A Lovely Year of Finishes)
  • Finish “Spoonflower Sampler” Quilt – baste, quilt and bind,
  • Finish “Phased Circles” Quilt – baste, quilt and bind,
  • Finish testing a paper piecing pattern – piece/top, baste, quilt and bind,
  • Finish two other projects (they are a secret for now ;-)) – cut, piece, top, baste, quilt and bind.

I plan to continue doing some of my usual posts WiP Wednesday, QDAD on Thursday, Finish it up Friday and Sunday Stash, they just might be a little intermittent.

Don’t you hate it when those projects sneak up on you :-). Linking up with Lee over at Freshly Pieced for WiP Wednesday and linking up with A Lovely year of finishes (see buttons on the right).

Spoonflower Sampler Quilt

The quilt top for my sampler design is finished!! I even got in a quick photo between the rain showers.

I decided that I would use a slight offset grid in the 2nd row as I wanted the Half Rectangle Triangles to form a flying geese pattern. I am really happy with how it has turned out.

The fabrics used (except for the Kona White) are all from Spoonflower:

Spoonflower Sample Block Tutorials

These blocks are being taught in my Spoonflower Classes, the last of the blocks are scheduled for September. In the meantime, I will continue to post each of the block tutorials, in case you want to make it up as well. Here are the first two:

That is my finish for this week. Linking up to Amanda Jean @ Crazy Mom Quilts for Finish it up Friday.
