Q3: Let’s have some fun

Experimenting = Fun

I want this quarter to be about experimenting and doing some fun projects. To assist with that I am going to choose a couple of projects from “Handmade Style” (Anna Graham – Noodlehead book). I am thinking about doing either the Zip Top Tote, Make-up Travel case, Floor Pouf, Carry-all Pincushion or the Basket. There are so many choices in this book!!

Something New, Something Old

I am, also, wanting to finish a couple of last years WiPs….

1. Pushme, Pullme Quilt, 2. Rangers Station, 3. Bjorn the bear, 4. Spoonflower Sampler Quilt.

And finish up a couple of outstanding patterns. The something new are these two new designs….

It takes a Village – Finish

I started this quilt, “It Takes A Village”, back in December. I think February, March and April, I listed it as my monthly goal for “A lovely year of finishes” but could not get it done. Well, I am ecstatic to say that have finally finished it!!

ItTakesAVillage_Front

It Takes A Village, started out as one of my Quilt Design a Day designs. I actually kept pretty close to the original color scheme.

QDAD_FlyingGeeseBrownLinen_3August2014

While pulling the fabric, I decided to switch out the lighter brown for a Cotton and Steel print. I thought it added some interest into the quilt, while the background color was similar to the design.

I tried a couple of new things with this quilt:

  • I bought a new tool – a BLOC LOC Ruler for a triangle in square. I loved it! It made it much easier to trim up the triangles and it improved accuracy.
  • I was inspired by Angela Walters book “Shape by Shape”, and decided to quilt each individual triangle, with one of three designs.

I used Aurifil for my quilting and it provided the most amazing texture to the quilt.

ItTakesAVillage_Quilting

For the back, I wanted a patchwork brick feel. However,  when finished, the back did not look right with lines moving horizontally, so I flipped it so the lines ran vertically. The final design decision I made, was to pull one of the colors out of the Cotton and Steel print and use it as a main color in the back and binding. It landed up being the blue, the pink just didn’t work for me.

Here are the final details for the quilt.

Q2 Planning – Goals

I have been feeling a little sluggish this quarter – though I probably accomplished more than I think. To do a better job of tracking my plans/finishes, I am going to re-commit to ALOYF and 2015 Finish Along.

My ButtonFirst up this month’s ALOYF, is the same as last months, but I must have about 2 hours maximum left on this project. That’s right, “It takes a Village” will be finished this month. I might even get the pattern finished too!!

So overall what are my plans and goals for the whole quarter:

Two quick-ish WiPs and ALYoF Goal

I have two WiPs that were not on my large list for the month, that is my focus this week.
RoadSignsBlocks_Cut

The first project are my starter blocks for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilts. My idea was to use road signs with a “architectural” feel and a minimal color palette and lots of neutrals (this post has all the details and inspiration). I have cut out 4 of the 6 blocks and plan to finish these this weekend where they will be shipped out to Liz over @ beadqueene.

PhasedCircles_morequilting

The second project….you will laugh…but it is Phased circles again. I got really great feedback from the judges at QuiltCon on the lack of quilting for the inner circles, which I went back and forward on in my head for several weeks. So, more quilting is happening this week, as I may enter it in another show.
PhasedCircles_morequilting_back

My WiP that will be my goal for this month is a project you have seen glimpses of. I am 1/2 way through quilting but to be honest a little over it/bored with it.  To make sure I finish it….I need it to be my goal for “A lovely Year of Finishes” (see button on the right). Keep on quilting, keep on quilting.

Finally, I wanted to share my favorite photo from my instagram feed this week. Look how pretty my work place was in the snow last week.

January news + giveaway

After my big clean up of my sewing room, I am feeling very productive. To keep the productivity up, I need to set my “A lovely year of finishes goals” for January.

My ButtonMy focus this month is to finish my Spoonflower Sampler quilt and write-up the pattern for each of the blocks. I have already made some progress on this quilt (sorry for the quality of the photos…we have had some grey and miserable weather over the last week).

  • The back is made:

  • The quilt sandwich is basted and some straight line quilting is underway.SpoonflowerSampler

My Blog and a Give away
Those that use WordPress hosted environment, knows that you get an annual report on how your blog went this year. In 2014,

  • If my blog was an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 4 days for that many people to see it.
  • My top posts were the iPhone/iPad stand tutorial, and Gypsy Wife QAL (final link up of the finish is happening now)
  • My blog was viewed by 137 countries
  • I posted 190 times this past year

The best news though, and the reason for running a give-away today is I now have 1,000 blog followers. I want to say a big  thank you to those that follow me, who make me feel part of a community and who have become close friends. hawthorne_threads_200_225I will randomly select a winner Tuesday 13 January 6pm EST….for a $30 gift card to Hawthorne Threads. Leave a single comment if you are a follower letting me know  the one big thing you want to accomplish this year. Mine … to “Sew my Stash” in the first 6 months of this year.

Additionally, based on WordPress annual report for my blog, I am sending a $30 gift card to these top commenters.

Thank you all !!!

Phased Circles, deadlines met!!

PhasedCirclesComplete

It’s finished and entered into QuiltCon. This was an epic quilting journey over the last week. Total hours of quilting = ~77 hours.

I had a couple of moments there, where I did not think I would make it, or I wasn’t sure I made the right quilting choice for the outer border. I am so thankful for a couple of friends  was texting with, and the IG community, without the support this definitely would not have been finished on time.

This is now my favorite quilt I have made, and over the next couple of days I want to share with you a couple of posts.  One on the design choices I made and why and the other on the matching binding.

In the meantime, here are some of my IG photos of my week’s progress.mosaic28491bd5b0ae3086c18072c732c823281fe8ba171. Block 1 front finished Dec 16th, 2. Block 1 back,  3.  Block 2 back, 4. Finish Along 2014

A must finish for November ALYoF

I have had a hard time finishing this quilt. I think I am somewhat intimidated by it. I love it and I am nervous that the quilting will not be right. This month, I plan to put on my big girl pants and jump in. I need to finish it by 30th November so I can enter it in the Quiltcon Festival (hopefully, my second entry).

So what quilt am I talking about….you guessed it “Phased Circles”.
Phased Circles Outside

The back was made to complement the colors in the front, featuring the black, white and grey prints from Carolyn’s lines….a total of 36 prints (yes, I have an obsession).

The quilt is basted, all I need to do is quilt and bind it and its done. Linking up with Melissa @ Sew Bittersweet Designs for A lovely year of finishes (See button on the right).
