QDAD: Quilt Design a Day (Week 15)

I recently purchased Josef Albers “Interaction of Color“. If you have not read this – it is amazing. I was so inspired that it influenced this week’s designs.

This second design for October 1st, started off with the same square and ombre design as above. I decided to play a little more and break up the square in quadrants and then moved the quadrant around within its place.

This was playing with the minimalism and transparency which Anne and the hubby saw a tree like design.

I played with it a little more and I really like it turned to the side. I also really like both the light and the dark backgrounds.

The color palettes this week are supplied by Amy @ Badskirt. She has the most wonderful palettes, more next week.

This stacked bar design was playing with layers and pops of color. I started of with predominantly neutrals and therefore a neutral background. QDAD_Layers_04OCT2014

However, my favorite landed up switching the background to the mustard-y color and all the neutrals placed in the stack.QDAD_Layers_04OCT2014_gold

So these are my Josef Albers inspired designs. On a final note:

QDAD: Quilt Design a Day (Week 14)

This week I decided to take on my own study – a study minimalism. New Zealand Maori designs  are predominantly colored red, black and white.

mosaicc074a402fbd33e581ce37630ae80a2f00e1ee654

This limited color palette helped focus the color palette and add to the study of minimalism, this week. I managed to do 3 series of designs.

Series 1: Houdini

“Trapped”
In this first design, I was hoping to capture the idea of feeling trapped. The black background showing the blackness, fear, and emptiness this may bring.

QDAD_TrappedintheDark_22September

I played with the design a little more to see how red would change the look and feel. I love it with the red.QDAD_TrappedRed_22September

“Escape”
This is obviously a follow-up to “Trapped” and represents release/freedom/escape.

QDAD_Escaped_22September

Again, the look of the design in red.QDAD_EscapedRed_22September

I was thinking through the escape and placement of the white bar and decided to move it further away and place at the opposite side.QDAD_Escaped3_22September

Series 2: Quartet

Series 2 is designed to be a set of 4 panels that would/could be placed as side by side wall hangings each at 6″ x 12″. Here are the initial 4 panels.

I have redesigned the second panel to look like this, which I may actually use if I make these up.

Series 3:

This series, which may not be complete, was playing with squares and rectangles and how sections align and are sectioned off.

“Fenced”

I really enjoyed the design activity this week and love looking at the simplicity of color and shapes. I am linking up with Lorna @ Sew Fresh Quilts for Let’s bee Social (see button on the right).

QDAD: Quilt Design a Day (week 13)

I decided to create my own theme this week, Plus designs. I loved the focus on a single topic and will definitely try and do a few more of these.

16 September:

Using a repeatable block design, with solids that represent the above colors.

QDAD_Plus_16September_solids
I also decided to try this one in prints. I like how the differences between the solid vs. print a lot with this design.

This is one of my favorite designs this week. I love the color palette and the simplicity of the design.

18 September:

Playing around with a repeatable block made up of the plus and arrows within a cross/plus layout. My favorite landed up being the second option which looks like a wonky totem.QDAD_Crossquilt3_18September_tower

The first option, I had as a full nested plus/cross.QDAD_Crossquilt3_18September

19 September:

Thi s is the second design that I love this week. It was inspired by a game of Tic Tac Toe (Naughts and Crosses). The line for the two colored background represents the winning line.QDAD_TicTacToe_19September

There are two design competitions going on at the moment, so if you want to give designing a chance it is a great idea.

If you want to check out more of my QDAD designs you can find them here. Stay tuned for next week where I focus on a minimalism study using only red, white and black.
