“A Fine Day” : Entry to Bloggers Quilt Festival

The talented Amy @ Amy’s Creative Side,  always puts a well-organized online quilt festival this time of year. I am entering a couple of quilts!!

The first one is my MQG Riley Blake Challenge quilt “A Fine Day”. It is an original design that was inspired by the color of the prints that were provided in the challenge. It reminded me of the colors of the sun throughout a fine day.

Sunrise (bottom left), Midday (top left), Sunset (top right) and Dusk (bottom right).

AFineDay_hangingWhile each block was planned, I used improv piecing to break up the colors and prints. Each of the blocks, has matching binding to frame it appropriately…which is one of my favorite things about the quilt.

For the quilting, I used invisible thread on top, since the colors varied so much. I tried my hand at circular quilting for the first time, trying to keep the sun theme in the quilting.  I loved the circular quilting.

Dimensions of this quilt is: 30 ” x 34 ”

Be sure to stop by and see the other quilt which I hope you enjoy ….this one is being entered in the modern quilt category.

Butterfly Baby Quilt

Something is in the water for sure. I have several friends at the moment that are pregnant. Congratulations to all of them!! The first one that is due, is my hairdresser, who is having a girl in late June.

I have always loved Juliet @ Tartankiwi’s butterfly paper piecing patterns. It did not take me long to make a decision to make my hairdresser a quilt using these patterns. I am thinking of using a 5″, 8″ and 10″ butterfly, moving up the quilt and the background will be all improv. low volume fabrics.

The first one, the 5″ Butterfly is complete. The main fabric used in this block will driving the color combinations of the bigger butterflies.  I am loving the color combinations.SmallButterfly_5

The 10″ butterfly is 1/2 way through. I am keeping with the teal and pink theme.

The last one, I am wanting to pull out that lime green that is scattered in the print, with orange and teal highlights.

If you are interested in Juliet’s patterns, they can be found in Craftsy:

I am hoping to have the quilt finished memorial day weekend…just in time for my last hair appointment before she leaves on maternity. Best news is…this is my May goal for ALYOF…and I have started!!

My Lotta Aerial Quilt

Melanie said it best over @ Mel in the attic with her Aerial quilt finish. This quilt represents so many great memories of one short weekend.

As mentioned in my summary of Sew Down Nashville, one of my favorite activities was Carolyn Friedlander‘s paper piecing class using her mini aerial quilt. Everyone’s quilt reflects their own personality, and it is so much fun seeing some of them being finished now.

Well good news, I managed to finish my top today.LottaAerialQuiltAll the blocks are made with various prints from Lotta Jansdotter Echo, Bella, Glimma, Mormor and Sylvia lines. The border is black yarn dyed essex linen.

I am thinking of quilting it with a crop circle-like design, like these:
