QDAD: Quilt Design a Day (Week 8)

This week has been an exciting time for our Quilt Design A Day group, especially exciting for Anne. Anne presented a great presentation on the “Quilt Design a Day: Discovering Your Creative Process”. If you are a MQG member, you can find the recording here.

Now, just as a reminder we are having a couple of challenge weeks at Quilt Design a Day. Last week started a shapes challenge…its finished up here this week, and followed by the beginning of the Medallion quilt design challenge.

7 August: Challenge Day 5 “Triangles” – Pennants

Screen Shot 2014-08-14 at 8.25.29 PM
This design is based on the international numeral pennants (0 through 9).

Based on feedback from the group, I added orange  which I really like  a lot. The second design I did for Anne to show the same design in prints.

8 August: Challenge Day 6 “9 Patch”

Screen Shot 2014-08-14 at 8.26.13 PM
The inspiration or challenge today is to use the 9 patch block in the design. I deconstructed the squares and made scrappy blocks in prints of that are representative of the above color palette.

9 August: Challenge Day 7 “Star” – Tapa Star

Screen Shot 2014-08-14 at 8.26.34 PM

This is an older design that I reused for the star challenge and played with this color palette. I would not usually use this palette so it was good to play and see what came from a new palette.

10-13 August: Medallion Challenge Day 1 – 4 (to be continued next week)

I had seen this cool black and white circle rug recently at either West Elm or CB2. I was thinking what a great idea to incorporate. Why not a circular Medallion quilt and what if some of it was bias applique.

That’s it this week. I am really looking forward to seeing how the medallion quilt turns out.

Progressing nicely

Last week, I was starting to freak out with all the UFO’s / WiPs I had on my list. Well….I can honestly say I have made a big dent into the list.

When I stress I make lists….this was my list last week and I have now completed the crossed out items.

  • Finish “Neighborhood” Quilt – top, baste, quilt and bind (this will be my main goal for August for A Lovely Year of Finishes)
  • Finish “Spoonflower Sampler” Quilt – baste, quilt and bind,
  • Finish “Phased Circles” Quilt – baste, quilt and bind,
  • Finish testing a paper piecing pattern – piece/top, baste, quilt and bind,
  • Project 1: Finish two other projects (they are a secret for now ;-)) – cut, piece, top, baste, quilt and bind.
  • Project 2: Finish two other projects (they are a secret for now ;-)) – cut, piece, top, baste, quilt and bind.

My WiP and a small finish, is that the Neighbourhood quilt top is complete. This has been made with Oakshott Cottons and Kona Oyster…. Onto to quilting!!!

I plan to take a long weekend to focus on quilting some of my quilts…so there maybe complete finished projects this week!!

Sunday Stash: The Shades of Cyan

Are you confused when people talk about aqua, teal, jade, turquoise, topaz or cyan?? This is one of my favorite color ranges at the moment. Cyan is actually one of three of the secondary colors in the RGB color models. All these colors can be considered a tint or shade of Cyan. I thought the shades were well represented in this wikipedia page.

I decided to take a pull of my Kona Solids and my prints to show you all, as a base.
