March was a little intermittent, as far as designing went, but I got a lot of quilting time in. Below are the color palettes and the design based on the color palette/inspiration.

The palette was so low-key and spacious, that I wanted to use a minimal design to ensure that feeling was portrayed in the design as well. 6MAR_2016(1)

I did not want to use all the colors with this design. I was inspired by Donald Judd’s wood print blocks. I played with the lines and in the end liked the irregular distances and directions. 07MAR_2016

March 08: Butter Knives

The inspiration photo definitely drove the idea for this design. Look it’s missing a butter knife in the picture. I really was playing with improv. shapes and lines. This is my favorite design for the month.

March 09: Sintra Gardens

A little bored of the design-seed palettes, I decided to use one of my own photos. I pulled in the angular shapes of the castles garden architecture. I love the unusual palette but think its cool how well all the colors play with each other. 09MAR_2016

March 11: Improvisational Log Cabins

I am always in love when I get a navy, cerise, coral palette. After playing with the butter knives design, I thought I would continue with some more improv. designs. This one is taking a log cabin and playing with the reverse colored borders in each log cabin block. I am thinking about going large-scale with this one. It’s on my possible make list.

March 22: Mountain Range

The mountains in this photo made me think of how rock formations are pushed up when tectonic plates crash into each other. I thought that was best represented by these lines stretching up in the air. The triangles represent the generalization of mountains and strength. 22Mar_2016

March 28: Barred Windows

The barred window in the barn here, perfectly reflected how I was feeling being stuck in bed from a round of Bronchitis. I actually like this one a lot too. 28MAR_2016(2)

I had such a blast last week, participating in Amy’s IGQuiltfest.  For those that are not on Instagram (IG) or missed it last week, Amy came up with 5 daily prompts in which you posted photos relating to those prompts.

Friday – WiP (Work in Progress)

On Friday, it was about your WiPs. I have 4 featured here in my sewing studio:

  • Mum’s Quilt (front),  which I tried table basting and loved it. I think this is my way forward with basting
  • Push me, Pull me quilt (on chair), ready to be sent off for quilting
  • Treehouse Ladders (left on design wall) is my entry for the Michael Miller Challenge for Sewtopia Atlanta. It’s me, channeling Pop Art Theme.
  • Beating Heart Quilt (right on design wall), my minimalism of a heart made from Ruby Red Oakshott Cotton Bundle.

Spoonflower Sampler Quilt {Finish}

This quilt finish was a long standing WiP, 100 weeks to be specific. It took me forever to finish the 1/2″ quilting on this quilt. I am so thrilled with the addition of the pink binding and to finally finish the quilt and the tutorial series, this past week.

I had a great journey with this quilt:

  • I started this way back during Sewdown Nashville, where I met Melanie Tuazon for my first time. I have found great quilty friends in this experience.
  • I discussed some of the complexities in my original design, with Melanie and finished that first block (Broken Chevrons).
  • My first sampler quilt.
  • I taught these blocks, as a 4-part series at Spoonflower in 2014. It was my first quilting class, I taught.
  • It was the first quilt I had sponsored (by Spoonflower). All the fabric was supplied.
  • I was able to write my first guest blog post on HST (half-square triangles).
  • All the blocks are all available now as free tutorials.

I simplified two of the blocks (6 & 7) and changed block 9 slightly from this original design.

The other thing I changed, was the addition of sashing between the blocks, and the slight offset in row 2. The offset is from no sashing between blocks 4 & 5 as I liked the fluidity of these blocks together. I added extra sashing on the right edge.

For the back, I want to use some of the extra neutrals I had left over with pull in the triangle designs from the front. I landed up with this improv. off-set cross with nested flying geese (made from left over HST’s). I almost love the back more than the front….I love the minimalism.

Spoonflower Sampler Quilt Back

For the quilting, I wanted to use the Inset Triangle block (block 8) as the initial focus. You can see the quilting lines have this arrow pointing down  – this effect was using this block. All the quilting is 1/2″ straight lines, created with my walking foot. I used Aurifil #2021 (Off-White) for the fantastic texture.

Tutorials
