WiP Wednesday: getting ready for vacation

What do you take on vacation with you?? I am not really a beach person though the rest of my family are, so I always try to take my sewing with me.

So next week, we are off to the beach for the week….and I am taking with me a few of my WiPs. This week, is all about getting packed and preparing the projects.

First up, Phased Circles: Background fabric selected

The plan is to balance the color, so I am using Kona Pepper, with black, white and grey Carolyn Friedlander fabrics.

Project 2: Spoonflower Class – Row 3 blocks, plan is to finish row 3 and minimally finish the quilt top.

Last night, I spent some time cutting out all the pieces of that 3rd row.

Project 3: Jungle Ave Quilt. Fabrics arrived and are beautiful, so I will start to plan and cut the quilt top.

Project 4: Of course, you need to keep a 4 1/2 hour drive interesting…so you guessed, it the hexagon quilt is coming with us.

So, that is my plan for next week…the rest of the week is prepping and cutting. Linking up with Lee over at Freshly Pieced for WiP Wednesday.

Phased Circles Quilt: Top Complete

Last month, I made my favorite quilt ever…..until this month. I have finished my Phased Circles quilt. I love this quilt so much, as my vision with my design came together so well, better than I could have dreamed.

I used 30 different Carolyn Friedlander prints, mixed from her Botanics and Architexture lines…can you believe it, that did not use all  the prints of hers I own (yes, I might have a slight fabric crush).

The solids were all Kona cottons and most of them were from the new colors – Curry, Prussian, Breakers, Torch, Valentine and lastly Wasabi.

The colors from these fabrics worked so well together. Here is a close-up of the center blocks. If you are interested in how I made these blocks, here is the tutorial.

Phased Circles Closeup For the back, I am using some of the gray, black and white prints of Carolyn’s lines, with just some simple piecing. I plan on doing straight line quilting to finish.

Phased Circles & June Goal for ALYOF

I have already started a new quilt….I know I am being super productive at the moment. I actually started this last week and had given you all a peek at it with the inner circles completed.

Name:  “Phased Circles”
Fabric: Mix of Carolyn Friedlander’s Architextures and Botanic lines; and the solids are all new Robert Kaufman Kona Cottons (Green=Wasabi, Blue=Prussian, Pink=Valentine, Jade=Breakers, Orange=Torch, Yellow=Curry).

Look,  I changed the background of the circles, and used lower-volume prints in the same color (where possible). The quilt top is already half completed – I am awaiting a delivery of solids for the other side to be completed. Phased Circles_10in_Border

I have not completely decided on the top and bottom borders being 10 inches, it feels at this stage a little too much. I might once it is completed but them back to around 5 inches.

I reversed needle-turn appliqué the circles in the backgrounds, which was the first time I tried this. I did started with a test block as I didn’t want to start right on the real thing. I was so impressed with this one, I moved on to the rest of them. I will have a tutorial ready for Friday to show you how to make your block…surprisingly they are relatively quick.

My June goal for ALYOF (a lovely year of finishes – see button on right) is to finish this quilt – quilt top, quilted, and bound.
