QDAD: Quilt Design a Day (Week 3)

This week, I had some time to play with the designs I came up with, and switch out colors. The previous two weeks can be found here:

  • Week 2 (contains details on what “Quilt Design a Day” is – so check it out if you missed it)
  • Week 1

Inspired by a typeset tray and blocks “Type Set Tray”.QDAD_TypeSetTray_26June2014

I played with this design in other color palettes and came up several others, here are a couple:QDAD_typesettray_26June2014_blue QDAD_typesettray_26June2014Blue_yellow

For today, I used both the cool and warm color palettes and played with arrow-like squares/pine-cone like design. In the cool colors it looks almost like a snowflake:

The warm color palette, I like both a neutral background and the bright background:QDAD_29JUNE2014_BirdPaletteLight QDAD_29JUNE2014_BirdPaletteBright

Inspired by a graphical print/drawing. These “Mod Crosses” are a 9 pieced block that I play with 2 colors and a neutral and their layout:

I then decided it may be even better if I use the neutral as the sashing, as well, and play more with the negative space….definitely love this one better:QDAD_30JUNE2014_modcrosses_negativespace

I loved the variety of this color palette and wanted to play with softer lines. The design is specifically one I could use appliqué with.QDAD_02July2014

This design was inspired by a backgammon game board. In this cool color palette transforms it into icicles.

Unabashedly Yellow Mosaic Competition

I love Rachel’s Mosaic Competitions over at Stitched in Color. Today, she posted a competition for one of my favorite colors…Yellow. Go over and check it out, it is a great way to start playing with colors.

My first entry is one of my favorite color combinations blue and yellow, with touches of grey. The greys and blues add a coolness to the palette.

My second entry, I used mostly warm colors to highlight an analogous palette.

Have a go, I promise you will enjoy it. Don’t forget to vote when voting opens.

Wonky Herringbone Placemats

I started some wonky herringbone placemats over the weekend. They are moving along nicely and are basted and ready for quilting.

If you are interested in the paper piecing pattern I use for the chevron/herringbone design, you can find it here. Some instructions:

  • Print at 71% or fit to page (is approx. 6 1/2 x 10 3/4″)
  • Cut the block out along the edge
  • Cut down the middle so you have two pieces
  • Once you finish paper piecing; make sure you measure the 1/4 inch seam allowance from the edge of the paper.
  • The final place mats above are 18 x 14″.

That is what I am working on this week + my blocks for Scrap-bee-licious Bee and Stash Bee.
