January, the month ahead

Based on my 2014 plan, my goal for January is to complete my Riley Blake challenge quilt design. Good news, I have made a start on my first improvisational piecing block – “Sunrise”. RileyBlakeChallenge_SunriseBlock_InProgress

This particular block colors were inspired by the Hipster Pop Orange which was provided as one of the MQG challenge fabrics.

One more thing…so I have also started cutting for my February goal the X & + Quilt. See these 90 blocks, I cut these in a matter of 15-20 mins. Want to know how?Accuquilt_Blocks

If you read my blog recently, you would know,  cutting is my least favorite thing….well no longer….this was my Christmas present, MY NEW ACCUQUILT!!!

I have already used it to make my HST for the Christmas tree block. I love it!

Riley Blake MQG Challenge – Fabric Choices

AFineDayQuilting

So, now that the design is complete, and I am going with the theme of ” A Fine Day”, the next step was choosing the fabric. Yes, it did mean I bought up some extra Riley Blake prints 🙂

Riley Blake MQG Challenge – Design complete

Have you seen the Riley Blake Modern Quilt Guild Challenge?? Our guild handed out fabric sometime in October. I have only started now, and until now I had no idea what I was going to do.

Here are the fabrics (picture from MQG page):

The Navy gingham, Hipster Orange, Yellow Polka dots and the Aqua/Teal zig-zag fabrics made me think of different phases of a fine day.

Sunrise: Yellows + Oranges
Mid-day: Yellows + bright blues
Sunset: Purples + Pinks
Evening: Navy blues + Blacks

This lead to this design “A Fine Day”. Each of the color blocks will be improv scrap blocks, not solid as in the design below.

I plan to quilt it with some circular quilting on the lower half and then radiating lines on the top 1/2 in various colored thread.

In the challenge, you can add any Riley Blake fabric + any solid. Tomorrow, I will post some of my additional fabric choices.

Are you entering the Challenge? What are your plans?
