WiP Wednesday {17.07.2013}: Preparing for vacation

Whoop!! Whoop!! I am on vacation Saturday, off to Charleston for the week. Good news, I am allowed to take my sewing machine and I negotiated with the hubby ~4 hours a day of sewing. After that discussion, I decided I would layout my projects and plan out what I would take with me.

All laid out, obviously being very optimistic…

I am also taking the baby hexagon quilt to do some hand sewing in the car and on the beach. I have one more project that I laid out decided to be a little realistic. A new quilt, first time using Kaffe Fassett fabric, want to make cross quilt from simply retro with low tones. Inspiration comes from this quilt by Adrianne @ On the windy side.IMG_7876

Simply Stars: Top+backing complete, now quilted

In just enough time for my Friday Finish, I completed the ultra wavy quilting of the Simply Star baby quilt. Only the binding to go…Whoop Whoop!!

I am really liking how my first big quilt is coming along. Unfortunately, it is a very grey morning but I managed to convince the hubby during a break in the showers, to help me get a couple of photos showing the progress:

I learnt so much with regards to quilting in this one. It definitely takes practice to get the smooth motions and how to move the fabric around when trying straight (ish) lines with a walking foot. I do have some little peaks in my straight lines that became less of an occurrence as I went along, and got the hang of quilting a large quilt. I was amazed at finding this great stripe fabric (a Robert Kaufman fabric) and the Moda cross weave green-yellow fabric at my LQS, Thimble pleasures.

NOTE: Marmalade Fabrics also have the cross weave fabric line.

The ultra wavy quilting was a lot of fun. I did not really plan the quilting out, it was more improv…as I finished each section I visualized the next lot of lines and how I thought it should be broken up. The lines are approximately 1 – 1 1/2″ apart.
