Clashy Bright Mosaic Entries

Rachel over at Stitched in Color is running another mosaic competition in conjunction with Marmalade Fabrics. I so enjoyed the last one, as I am always seeing colors combinations I can translate into fabric selections. This time since the goal is to look at bright, high volume colors, and she has some great photos for inspiration in her post.

This is my first entry:

Tulips_Netherlands

which is based on this amazing photo of flowers in the Netherlands (I am thinking tulips). The vibrancy has been one of my favorites for a while now and I am thinking that this would be a great striped quilt.

The second entry is inspired by a bright tiled wall of randomly placed tiles. I decided that I really liked the idea of an entry with pre-dominant solids which are the bright tiles and then the lower volume, less bright tiles being of prints.

Both of these photos, I found via pinterest and are on my design board. I hope you all will go over and take a stab at creating your own mosaic…have fun!!

After a little more playing around, my ultimate solid collection, I would probably chose, to represent the tiled wall is:

Weekend Progress – Simply Stars

On Friday, I posted about finishing the front of my first baby quilt, Simply Stars. Well, I had a pretty productive weekend and made significant progress on that quilt. It is not finished but I thought I would share some sneak peeks of the progress I made.

This is the quilt back. I made a panel with 3 wonky stars but in the reverse of the front….the back pieces are white, while the stars are made of Simply Color and Simply Style Charm Packs. For the rest of the back, the green solid woven with yellow fabric used as a border for the star panel and the striped fabric, I had to go shopping at my LQS. What a shame !!!

Simply Stars Quilt back
Since I finished the back in record time, I started quilting on Sunday. I am using an ultra wavy line quilting, which Janice from Better of Thread featured here, and sewing in Grey Aurifil thread. I am about 1/2 way through so here is a sneak peek of the front.

A couple of close-up photos of the quilting through the stars. The only other quilting I have done has been on a smaller scale, like in  pillows (and here) and the Madrona Road mini quilt….so I am super happy how this is turning out. It is not perfect, it is so much harder sewing a much bigger object. I am loving the grey thread. The main thing is I am having fun, and I am sure the imperfections will just add character :-).

I am hoping to show it off on Friday – which will depend on how my work week goes.

Fabric Stash {07.07.2013}: Yellow, Yellow, Yellow

When you think of yellow, what pops into your head??
“We all live in a Yellow Submarine – Beetles”
“Yellow – Cold Play”
“You are my sunshine – Jimmy Davis”
“Follow the yellow brick road – Wizard of Oz”

Last week, in desperate need to add yellow to my stash, I showed you the mosaic I built from images from Fabricworm.com. I really was looking for more bright yellow, with a few of mustards.

I ordered all the fabric from Fabricworm.com, except for the Glimma fabric as I already had it. It arrived and I am pretty happy with the selection. There is a range from bright yellow –> mustard –> Citrus’y.

Citrus/Citron colored fabric on the left (my least favorites, I was just not quiet expecting these to be so green/lime in color):

Mustards (great for the darker toned yellow stash…adds some depth):

In addition to the fabrics, I purchased at Fabricworm this week, I also made the following additions to my yellow stash, all of which I really like.

That’s it from me this week, I am definitely now stocked up with yellow. Linking up with Fiona @ Finding Fifth for Sunday Stash.
