Celestial Spheres (Part 1): Winter Solstice

I received some happy mail a couple for weeks ago, that I knew would be perfect for a recent QDAD design (not shared yet on my blog). I love these Handcrafted prints by Alison Glass, the colors are so vibrant.

This is the first of a series of quilts inspired by the colors of Winter’s peak – the winter solstice. I love the grey and cooler colours which I think are perfect for this winter theme. The Handcrafted prints worked well with the background fabric which is from Botanics, Carolyn Friedlander.

WinterSolsticeQuiltTop

The quilt is 30 x 30 ” with circles at 3″ diameter (cut with a Olaf circular rotary cutter). I measured out the start and end positions of the two lines and for the diagonal line I used washi tape (or painters tape) to ensure the placement of the middle circles remain straight. I tacked the circles at 1/4″ on the background fabric.

This was the perfect project for hand sewing on vacation….yes, I took it on our girl’s weekend and a business trip. Each circle, I used needle turn applique to finish the circles (similar to the technique shown in this tutorial).IMG_2866

The next one in the series will represent the Autumn Equinox….I have the fabrics ready for my next business trip in early November.AutumnEquinox_FabricSelection

“Hot House Orchids” : Entry for Bloggers Quilt Festival

So, this is my second quilt I am entering in Amy’s Bloggers Quilt Festival.

AmysCreativeSide.com

I loved this project for so many reasons:

  • The study of the color radiant orchid
  • My first ever appliqué quilt
  • I was exploring the using of lines and borders and inspired by Quilting: Color + Lines  by Yoshiko Jinzenji

HothouseOrchids_Front

The fabric for the front is Alison Glass’ line Clover Sunshine, which has such fabulous colors.

I just used some irregular straight line quilting on this one, to ensure the quilting did not take away from the study of lines.

I am entering this one to the appliqué quilt section. You should take a look, I already have a favorite in this category….the one with all the chairs….LOVE IT!!

Hothouse Orchids – Pantone Quilt Challenge Finish

I have finished my Pantone Quilt Challenge quilt. This mini quilt really allowed me to explore a couple of themes:

  • A color study with Radiant Orchid, where I used shades of Radiant orchid as sashing and across the diagonal from top left to bottom right. The whole clover sunshine line by Alison Glass offered great radiant orchid like prints and great complementary colors.
  • A theme study for Borders and Lines; after reading Quilting: Color + Lines  by Yoshiko Jinzenji, I thought this would be a great opportunity to explore this topic with fiber.

HothouseOrchids_Front

This quilt is all appliqué, which was my first time using this technique. I really enjoyed it. I had a hard times with a couple of decisions:

  • Should I put a thicker border around the edge?

  • Should I go darker or go white for the binding?

After great feedback from my IG friends (thank you), I chose no thick borders, and I did go with the darker binding.
