Small finish for Friday + Winner

Ever wondered what to do with those jeans with a torn knee, besides patching them? I have seen a couple of ideas lately. Here are a couple I pinned:

My son has one favorite pair, and in the middle of summer he wanted to wear them. One, it was way to hot, and two they had large holes in the knees. We decide to cut them just above the knee, put some stitching around the bottom and voilà….a pair of shorts were created :-).

We then decided to recycle the cut off pieces, not a large amount so we created a pencil-case for school. I cleaned up the edges, cut two pieces of like size, pulled a zipper and some fabric for lining and the appliqué. I had purchased some time ago now the “Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus” fabric line which my son is enjoying reading at the moment. This is the end result.

Above is my collage of my finished works for April. I am pretty pleased with what was accomplished. I got a little distracted with Pillows and projects from Patchwork Please but I had had so much fun which is what it is all about.  Great news this week, I also got an order for 5 chair bags….so I am off to work on those 🙂

Here were my goals and where they landed up. My extra projects pictured above were the bag (used for a guild swap), pencil-case and the two cushions that have been my focus this week.

  1. Focus on stock for my Etsy Store.
    • Chair Bags (x2 sets)
1 set is completed – posted on Etsy and blogged here
    • Oven Mitts (x1 set)
I finished one for a friend posted here
    • Coffee Cup Sleeves (x2)
Completed 3!! and posted in my store….A few kind folks also posted them on pinterest. Blogged here and here
    • Pouches/ Cases (x2)
I did complete two pouches, just not the two I had planned. Both landed up being gifts. The pencil-case one from Patchwork Please was a lot of fun to make and featured above.
    • Set of place mats (x1 Stretch goal)
      Not surprisingly did not start
  2. Make a Pin cushion (from Patchwork Please) and a travel sewing pouch
Pin cushion complete and blogged here, also posted on the Zakka Along 2.0 Flickr site
  3. Make a travel baby quilt for charity  (~30x20in.)
    Not started
  4. Madrona Road Challenge – Mini Quilt
I have managed to get 2 1/2 blocks done. I will have to get a move on or rethink my approach since this Challenge ends May 12th.

My General goals continue:

  1. Try to eat and exercise to plan
I think as far as food goes – this month was much more on plan
  2. Blog regularly using my new schedule
    On target

Weekend finishes…Chair Bags, Pencil Case, Coffee cup sleeve

I am switching my posts around today, as I am waiting to get photos of the hubby for the our weekly recap and menu plan. So, instead today here are my weekend finishes.

1.  New 3 pocket chair bag (chair pocket) set for my Etsy store. I desperately need a couple of girl sets, so I chose purple to start.  The materials I used for these were corduroy, and home essential fabrics that I had purchased at JoAnn’s.

2. A pencil case using one of the projects from Patchwork, Please by Ayumi Takahashi. It is a paper piecing project with small pieces. Unfortunately, this one is definitely not perfect, I had traced the pattern onto paper, and with the slight inaccuracies from tracing, then the slight sewing inaccuracies the pencil tops were a little wonky. I would recommend using a photocopier instead of tracing, at least I will next time. I chose not to do the embroidery stitching this time as I thought there was enough color with the choices of the fabric below.

I used the following materials:

Yellow: Riley Blake, Yellow on yellow Chevron.
Orange: Crosshatch in Tangerine from the Architextures collection by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman.
Green: Metro Living Circles in Chartreuse from the Metro Living Collection from Robert Kaufman Fabrics.
Purple: Lizzie House’s Pearl Bracelet in purple for Andover Fabrics.
Blue: Bubbles in Blue from Maritime Modern by Marin Sutton for Riley Blake.
Grey: Essex Linen Blend
Main Pocket: Osnaburg (with Pellon Shape flex for strength….I really need to purchase some neutral linen)
Lining: Lucie Summers, Summersville, Alphabetty Seafoam Fabric.
Ribbon: From JoAnn
Zip: From ZipIt

The back is quilted simply with a straight line.

If you like this and my pin cushion you should join the Zakka Along 2.0 :: Patchwork, Please Flickr Group which starts June 3rd (I am just loving this book and being too keen which is funny as I am always so late to participate).

3.  I made another hexagon coffee cup sleeve – this one I am keeping. I tried a couple of new things with my design, I changed the stitching I used to join the hexagons which definitely hid the stitches a little better, and I sewed the elastic tie between the layer. I used the Sew Stitchy by Aneela Hoey for Moda fabric which I used in the above pin cushion. Additional materials you can find in here.

4. The last project I made, which I did not get photos for. It was a little Easter pouch/pocket that I made as a gift for Sean’s friend. She loved it and all the goodies inside.
