First Madrona road block for mini quilt

Our quilt guild Madrona Road Challenge started last month and ends in May. I had seen so many wonderful Madrona Road finishes I really did not know what I could do that is original, until I received my March issue of Dwell Magazine (a modern architecture and design magazine), this month’s focus is on Interior Design. In the article, Industrial Designer,  it shows how a 200 year old factory was transformed into an modern style and inviting home (pages 86-93). It is truly magnificent.

What captured my imagination were the tiles that was used in this transformation. There are two designs I want to use as quilts, but the one I am hoping to put into a 9 block mini quilt are these floor tiles:

Here they are again in the top two photos for the shower and bathroom, I am using the shower photo as my reference for my mini quilt :Page 92

The first block is finished, which I am calling “Checkers Board Block”  – this is my finish for the week (linking up with Amanda from Crazy Mom Quilts).

I am excited about this project as I have not made a mini quilt before and I am trying some new techniques out along the way :-). This weeks technique, that was different than what I normally do, was how I pressed the blocks to get them to line up and fit well together – I pressed the strip seams in opposite directions to each other. I liked how it turned out.

If all the other blocks turn out, I will make an effort to create patterns and post them, in case someone is interested.

Four Seasons in One Day – Quilt top

So, I have finally finished my quilt top for my “four seasons in one day”. This is my first quilt top ever – it fits a twin.  I was by myself the day I finished and had about 30 minutes of light left….so these are the best photos I have for now – I used my son’s playground as my photo assistant 🙂

Some details:

  • The tree design is my own.
  • All buttons and sequins are hand sewn on.
  • Joel Dewberry Notting Hill Jelly roll was used for the 1/2 Chevron border and the center borders. (thanks to all those who provided the encouragement to finish the Chevron border – it turned out great).
  • The corners of the border is just Kona Cotton yellow and red (the corners are not perfect but I still love how it turned out).

February goal check

This weekend has been really productive!!!, and it means that I am closer to my February Goals. If you remember, I linked up with A lovely year of finishes  and The Girl who Quilts (and I won the give-away, which is so cool!!!)

This is a check-in on where my goals are.

  1. As mentioned on Friday 1st, complete top and back of my “Four Seasons in one day” (named after a crowded house song)
    I have now almost completed the top – I worked out a way to make the border in more of a block instead of a string which gave me more manageable pieces to work with. I also worked out the corner pieces as well 🙂

  2. Finish 4 sets of chair bags.
    I have cut out 2 sets of chair bags but have not started sewing yet. 
  3. Finish 4 sets of pot holders.
    I have 3 sets of pot holders completed…our kitchen is a light green – these are the ones I made for use in our kitchen.

  4. Cut out fabric for my son’s quilt.
    Not started yet 
  5. Triple zip pouch.
    Fabric and other materials selected. 
  6. Try out a paper piecing block.
    Not started yet but I have something in mind.

  1. Continue with Life Style Challenge.
